Pantheon is located in the heart of the historical centre, in the Pigna district. The temple is dedicated to all deities, past, present and future.
It was built in 27 BC by Augustus's son-in-law Marcus Vispasianus Agrippa, and later rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian after fires in 80 and 110 AD.
It stands on an area of 2,000 square meters and boasts a maximum height of 45.6 meters and a width of 54.5 meters.
The facility is circular and is joined to a pronaos in Corinthian columns designed to support the pediment.
The circular rotunda cell is surrounded by masonry walls and eight pillars on which the weight of the hemispherical concrete dome rests.
Here we find the most important feature of Pantheon: even today, 2,000 years after its construction, we are still talking about one of the largest masonry domes ever built in the world, and in particular it is the largest built in Roman concrete.
In the center of the dome is an oculus 8.92 meters in diameter that allows natural light to pass through.
During the summer solstice, the sunbeam that penetrates through the oculus draws a luminous disk on the floor with a diameter equal to that of the oculus.
